What's a database?

A database is like a card index file. It stores information in a rigid structure, allowing you to search through to find information quickly.

Imagine each card is preprinted with headings such as:- NAME, ADDRESS, POSTCODE, TELEPHONE, BIRTHDAY etc.

This makes each 'blank' card the same until you 'fill in the blanks' (headings, or in the case of a database 'fields'). As you fill each card in you put the card into the index, probably in alphabetical order. This allows you to search for information quickly, using the index tabs A, B, C etc.

A database can sort information under any heading, in large quantities very quickly.

Make your existing data work harder

Instead of writing one page for each product you have, we can write a database access page that takes information from your product database. So whenever you change your product information at the office, you have changed your web site!

This is a very effective technique and makes for an efficient way of providing access to LARGE amounts of data, quickly and with minimal room for errors.
